The Builder Foundation… an innocuous name for an incredible non-profit organization run by Charmaine Artajo, Founder and COO. Today marks the 5-year anniversary of their humble beginnings in Oceanside, CA.

What started, as an idea to anonymously help a few people, grew into a movement that has significantly impacted the greater San Diego County community. According to Ms. Artajo, she and numerous people are fulfilling their desire to improve the well-being of our great community.

Ms. Artajo explains… Years ago, I realized that for me to fulfill my desire to help people, I had to start somewhere. Holding a door open, donating towards a worthy cause, volunteering at a charitable event always gave me a feeling of joy and satisfaction.

However, I wanted to do more AND so did my friends and business partners. We know and appreciate how wonderfully blessed we are living and working in this community. Yet, many people miss the beauty of the ocean, parks and downtown area.

Why? Their heads are down, minds filled with worry… struggling to meet basic needs; food, shelter, mental, spiritual and physical wellness. With our own abundance and blessings, we decided to make changes. So, a friendly competition ensued… looking for more ways to help.

One example of community support is tow truck services. Remember that gut feeling when your car was broken down on the side of the road? In the rain…?! While expecting to pay out-of-pocket or arrange insurance claims, the tow truck driver would explain the service rendered was at no-charge.

A simple call created a ripple effect; a satisfying task accomplished, a possible new friendship and future foundation relationship. In other cases, restoration services at tattoo shops or hair salons were provided at no-charge. Health care charges were paid in full. Imagine the elation of families who were no longer burdened by financial strain.

Remaining anonymous was short-lived as those receiving support constantly asked for the benefactor’s name. After learning of the foundation’s generosity, each person choose some type of action to pay-it-forward towards helping the community.

After helping families’ meet basic needs, the goal grew to building up the individual, the family, the business which, in turn, would build our community. Hence, the creation of the Builder Foundation.

From inception to fulfillment!
