minutes remaining

Many years ago I worked in the interior design field. I helped people pick colors and design style for their living spaces. It was a reflection of who they were.

The most difficult clients were the ones who did not have a sense of who they were and thus what they truly liked. In the process of redesigning a room, the old décor needs to be removed. This could include more than removing a sofa or a chair, it often includes ripping out flooring, tearing out a wall, and really digging into some deep spaces.

In my first house I owned with my then husband, the toilet handle broke one day. No problem, I thought and I rushed to the hardware store to replace. Not that simple, however.

The toilet was very old and they didn’t make handles to go with that type of toilet any longer, which meant we had to buy a new toilet. Once we pulled the toilet up, we found dry-rot, which meant new flooring, including some sub-floor, which meant pulling up the bathroom cabinet.

By the time we were done, that toilet handle resulted in a couple thousand dollars and many hours of labor, and it was beautiful!

Going through a personal growth process is much the same. I am digging in to remove old styles that don’t work anymore. I am installing new hardware that will support a new way of being. This process is messy, it get’s boring, there is frustration, and yet I am committed to the work.

This week was full of busy activities, some great things are starting to happen, I am receiving referrals to clients from what feels like out of nowhere. Under my old design, I would get nervous and think “well, this is not real, something will happen.” Now, I receive with joy in my heart.

Reading my DMP daily, having the vision board, and using the shapes is helping my stay focused on positive, the mental diet is hard, only because I seem to forget that I am “on a diet.” However, I focus on the positive, and that seems to help. I am excited to see the transformation.

  • I really enjoy your blog, Ramona! As I read, I started finding myself thinking about many experiences that relate in the same way. All sparked by your wonderful blog; thank you!

  • I loved this blog post – the comparison to the internal work we are doing to a toilet is delightful.

  • Ramona, what a lovely way to share your observation of transformation, especially with something as “mundane” as a toilet handle. What a great share! Thanks so much.

  • Love your blog Ramona!! The analogy you describe between remodeling and our growth journey. We start out with an intention (replace the broken toilet handle) and often times end up discovering other aspects of the “project” need to be addressed. Often times we have no idea the “dry-rot” was even there. Cheers to you for digging deeper and embracing your Hero’s Journey. Very inspiring blog; thanks for sharing your insights with us!
