I had watched this movie a couple of times back in the 90s, but not from the same perspective as the way I watched it this week.
The couple of times I had watched it before, I enjoyed the movie and thought it was a really good story and I appreciated the fact that he made it unto the field and played with his brothers and, father and mother watching.
This time I watched it, not just for the great story that it is and just entertainment, but really paying attention to all the things I’ve learned through “Standing Tall”, and of course Master Key Experience.
From the beginning, he has a clear Definite Major Purpose, his heart’s desire. He tells anyone and everyone that one day he will attend Notre Dame and play football for Notre Dame. He envelopes himself in all things Notre Dame, and Notre Dame football.
He watches all the games; he memorizes coach speeches. He envisions it all every day, and continues to say it aloud.
Also from the beginning, his family, his friends and everyone makes fun of him and continues to tell him his crazy, he’s too small, he can’t afford to attend Notre Dame, all the reasons he should stop chasing his dream.
That is everyone except his good friend Pete (his early guide) who encourages him and keeps the fire of Rudy’s dream going.
Receiving the Notre Dame Jacket from his friend Pete for his 22nd Birthday and then loosing his friend in an accident propels him to accept the call.
He had put in the work and things start to manifest. The priest that helps him get into a college to bring his grades up. A friend in the college who helps him study to get his grades up.
The grounds keep supervisor for the Notre Dame football field gives him a job, and later a key to the office he had been sneaking into to sleep. He continues to immerse himself in all things Notre Dame.
He gets rejected by the University several times, but persists; he continues to work hard, wears that Notre Dame jacket, he continues to smell, see, feel, touch everything Notre Dame.
He finally gets accepted to the University and also tries out as a walk on for the team and makes it on the team. Then for two years he gives his best at every practice in the hopes that he will be on the roster to play in a game.
The day of the last practice of his last year at the university, he looks at the roster for the last game, and his name is still not on it.
This was his last chance and he wasn’t on it. He almost gives up his dream at that moment, but a guide/mastermind (the grounds keep supervisor) lights the fire back on.
He decides to go to the last practice, as always, he does his best, ends up on the roster, and gets to play on the field for Notre Dame the last few seconds of the game, with his family blissfully watching him.
He persisted because it was his true heart’s desire and he had several mastermind partners. He lived it, touched it, expressed it aloud every day to everyone and he put in the work required.
Thanks so much for sharing your review of Rudy. It’s amazing how Rudy did everything he could to go to Notre Dame and play football for Notre Dame. Even when he was faced with so many obstacles he never steered away from his goal. I’ve never watched Rudy but now I want to watch it!
Great blog Pedro- Love how you pointed out that he surrounded himself with all things Notre Dame. Never forgetting his dream and always seeing it daily.
Hi Pedro, Enjoyed reading your review. Rudy was very persistent, good for you to observe him.
