Cool Runnings was a delightful watch! A very different and touching role for John Candy. Both funny and inspiring.
The parts that really stood out for me:
The excitement was palpable when Derice was watching the Swiss team for when they first got there. Observing and learning their moves was part of his plan to succeed.
Then at the end when they decided to be themselves and use their own wording to get themselves fired up rather than copy the Swiss. I still feel the excitement!
I was encouraged by Coach’s speech about pride to the judges who wanted to unreasonably disqualify them. Then too as the Jamaicans at home were watching the team on television. It gave them a reason to together too. A loving bond.
Junior finally stands up to his father as a teammate shows him how to be a man even though the two did not start out on good terms. Junior finally saw himself as a real team member, not just the own sponsoring their trip to the Olympics.
Very touching for me. It brought me to tears, even now as I am typing.
Then it fascinated me to watch them practice over and over again and finally they make their time in that rickety old bobsled given to them. They saw it through even though it really did not happen easily.
And of course, at the end when they crashed and picked up the bobsled and walked it across the finish line. A very honorable way to handle it. If everyone watching had no respect for them before, they certainly did now.
I was cheering them on the whole way. This movie inspired me to never, ever give up.
