One of our challenges last week in the Master Key Experience was to turn the TV off for a week. As part of my Definite Major Purpose, I had already included “I expectantly trade more than seven hours a week of TV time to read, study and apply skills.”
This challenge was met with a thud by my spouse who does not feel the same way. What to do? Round up earplugs and a head set to wear when the TV was on and position myself out of the sightline. I closed doors to rooms to deaden the sound. The first day was the hardest as I was figuring out work arounds.
After two days, my spouse started leaving the TV off for several of the time blocks when I needed to be around – like eating breakfast and dinner. The vibration you feel when chewing food and brushing teeth does not feel particularly good with earplugs. I used an over the ear headset then and that was more comfortable.
As the week progressed, we ended up playing a game of Texas Hold’em and Yahtzee (I had a double Yahtzee) on two of the evenings. I found that to be enjoyable. It worked as a substitute for what I would call “date night” where we usually watch a movie that both of us can enjoy once a week.
I also found myself tackling one of my projects using that “no TV time” well. I was preparing for overnight company so did major decluttering in our guest room!
There are about three weekly shows I look forward to. I did not watch them and felt like that was an accomplishment. The result for me was “Mission Accomplished.”
Till next time, wishing you progress and creativity in the challenges you accept!
Hi Patricia, That is a great accomplishment to break a TV habit and put in productive time instead. Good going
Thanks Teri. Also appreciated the tips you have shared with me on Marco Polo!
Thanks!!
I can imagine that brushing your teeth with earplugs on doesn’t feel good. Great progress Patricia
Great job Pat! Having to tune out the TV had to be hard with another person in the house. Kudos to you for finding a way around that and using your time wisely!
