During my first week of the Master Key Experience 2023/2024 I discovered I had some very negative opinions about Salespersons.

I listened to the story part of Og Mandino’s The Greatest Salesman in the World in chapter 7 where Hafid entered Damascus and was confronted with all the Salespersons trying to selling him their wares.

I was surprised I had many preconceived resentments toward people in the sales profession. I was a bit shocked as I consider myself very open minded. Well, I think I found some more cement to work off.

I did some self observation work.

The first part of my self observation I discovered I put salespeople in some stereo type boxes:

1) The classical used car salesperson
2) The Ambulance Chasing Attorney
3) The character Green Acres’ Mr. Haney who always had something to sell to Mr. Douglas and had numerous back up products to offer

Then I did some more self observation work asking myself what bad salesperson experiences I have had. The interesting part is I have had only two bad experiences with salespersons that I recall:

1) I fell for a used car salesman trick of asking for my keys to check out my trade in and then did NOT return until I looked at several of the dealer’s cars
2) Salespeople ignoring my response that I have no interest at all in the product or industry

The next self observation thing I did was ask myself what feeling / experience was involved and I came up with:

1) Distrust
2) Being bullied
3) NOT being listened to

Do others have some of these stereotype opinions of Salespersons?

I have a very accomplished sales mentor, that I do NOT have that these same experiences or feelings about.

So, it really caught me by surprise when all this came up.

I am asking my inner guidance on what to do with what came up.

Have a terrific week everyone!

  • Michael, I relate to your salesperson experience. I also had my keys taken during a car-buying experience. Then I fell for it again 13 years later when I bought my next car. However, it was then that I realized we are all salespeople. We are all selling something, maybe not for material gain, but our thoughts, opinions, and ideas are all forms of selling. Interesting thoughts!!

  • Great awareness, Michael! And isn’t it great to use the tools we have from this class to move past that negativity.
